​​​​​​​This course is designed to prepare candidates to take the exam to become a state-licensed mortgage loan originator in Maryland under the Commissioner of the Office of Financial Regulation (OFR), part of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR). This 5-hour course covers state-specific rules and regulations in Maryland, and is required as part of the 20 hours of prelicensure education needed to become a Maryland licensed mortgage loan originator. 

Topics and Learning Objectives

This course consists of four modules and a final exam:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Maryland Mortgage Law

  • Module 2: Mortgage Loan Originators

  • Module 3: Mortgage Lenders

  • Module 4: Additional Maryland Laws

  • Final Exam 

Total study time: 5 credit hours (250 minutes)

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the government entity that issues mortgage licenses in Maryland.
  • Define specific mortgage-related legal terms.
  • Identify who needs a mortgage license and who is exempt.
  • List items required on a mortgage license application.
  • List education requirements and mark important dates on your calendar.
  • Identify potential law violations that may result in suspension of license or fines.
  • Identify which entities need a lender license and which are exempt.
  • List basic duties that all lenders must maintain.
  • Cite differences between MLO and Lender law requirements for education.
  • List required items for a lender license application.
  • Identify the main concepts of various Maryland lending laws.
  • Identify specific regulations and prohibited actions that directly affect mortgage business.
