How to renew your California real estate license and choose the correct continuing education courses.
California requires 45 hours of continuing education classes (CE) for all real estate licensees. The California Department of Real Estate (DRE) requires different topics based on your license status.
Courses can also be taken individually following the DRE's real estate education requirements, or as part of a convenient 45-hour package.
If this is the first time you have ever renewed your real estate license, the DRE wants you to take 5 required fundamental courses, 18 hours of consumer protection courses, and the remainder on either consumer protection or consumer services courses.
Requirements for renewing for the second or subsequent time are similar to first-time renewals. However, you may choose to take an Eight Hour Survey course that covers the five basic subjects in one survey course instead of taking each one individually.
Each course you complete will provide a certificate of completion with a date and authentication number. After completing 45 hours of courses, you can renew your California real estate license by using the DRE's eLicensing system, or by mailing in your renewal application.
We strongly recommend that you use the online eLicensing system. Attempting to renew by mail is slow and error prone.
